BIOGRAPHY
With deep roots in Ojai, California, Crystal Davis' first experiences with clay came as they did for many children--
playing along the muddy edges of San Antonio Creek. I was lucky to live walking distance from its sycamore and willow shaded edges. A quick dash through the the spider-festooned culvert got me safely under Highway 33 and to the flanks of the shallow creek with its shockingly green algae-tresses that heralded long summer afternoons. But enough water ran year round to keep the secret reserves of gray clay just damp enough that we could smear our faces with it and fashion little bowls and plates left to dry in the sun. I've crossed many roads since then and taken my share of detours that drove me dismal distances from clay. Gratefully, I've spent my best hours elbow-deep in it for many years now, and have embraced it with the fervor of a prodigal who has returned humbly to her one true love.

Crystal's first formal pottery experience was childhood lessons from a local artist whose studio was idyllically wedged between an apple field and San Antonio Creek. Later she studied with Jody Cooper, benefitting from Ms. Cooper’s artistry, fastidious craftsmanship, and no-nonsense attention to detail, as well as her generosity. Crystal continues to craft pottery in her home studio, Sespe Pottery.
