FAQ
-
Are Sespe Pottery Glazes Food Safe?Yes, all functional ware is glazed with commercially prepared glazes that are certified "food safe."
-
Can Sespe Pottery Be Used in the Microwave?Yes, Sespe Pottery is safe for ordinary microwave use. And with any dish, you should not heat it in the microwave empty (don't ask me why you would do that, but just don't)!
-
Is It Advisable to Wash Sespe Pottery in The Dishwasher?Yes, I do it all the time. Generally, the glossier a glaze in the better it will hold up to repeated washings--whether by dishwasher or by hand. Dishwasher soaps can be more caustic than ordinary dish soaps, but I have not had a problem with any of the glazes I use.
-
Can I Use Sespe Pottery in the Oven?I do all the time. Sespe Pottery is fired in the kiln to 2232 degrees Fahrenheit, so it's unlikely the temperatures you might reach in your oven can affect it. As with any baking dish, you do want to avoid "thermal shock." That means taking something really cold and making it suddenly really hot or the other way around. I bake sourdough bread at nearly 500 degrees Fahrenheit in covered Sespe Pottery dishes.

If I Order Sespe Pottery Online Will the Item I Receive Be Identical to the Photo I Saw on the Website?Unlikely it will be photo-identical. I will strive to match the description and visual image that you saw on line, but the nature of handmade work is that each piece is unique, bearing the eccentricities of the maker's mood, glaze application, kiln conditions, and so on. If you are a collector of artisan-made art you have probably already learned to appreciate its subtleties. That said, if you order Sespe Pottery and what you receive is truly divergent from the photo and specification noted on the website, contact me and we will work something out. I aim to please and am proud of my work.
