Thoughts on the often muddy intersection between life and art

The Rough Edges

Whenever new work comes out of the kiln I am reminded of a Dolly Partonism, when she noted how expensive it was to make herself look so cheap. I’m in mind of it because, I like many of you, enjoy the rustic look of exposed, unglazed clay in contrast to a compatible glaze. An outdoors person at heart, I love my pottery to look as if it could be part of the landscape. Yet I also want to create pottery that pleases the hand, begs to be used time and again—even cherished a little. To this end, each ware is inspected for its trueness, weight, and functionality and has its rough surfaces sanded down (those who know me might wish I could do this for myself ) before it is boxed and ready for you. Thanks for sharing the experience of what it means to be a potter.
